About “The Journals of Constant Waterman”
What kind of book is this ?
This is a collection of memoirs, essentially about boating. Most of it is nearly true; the rest has been embellished to make it worthwhile reading. It is descriptive, lyrical, wistful, and, at times, introspective. On a couple of occasions, the author attempted to provoke the reader into thinking, but as this is something he seldom does for himself, it was evident, early on, that it should not be attempted too often.
Although it is “essentially” about boating, it includes other aspects of waterfront life. Fishing, swimming, building an octagonal cottage on an island, repairing boats, and pursuing mermaids: all have parts to play. A couple of pieces deal with deaths, or the long dead days of childhood. As the author is still on the sunny side of a century, these whims should be overlooked.
All of you must come to it in the end: the decision to grow old and die or else to continue boating. The author hopes that this forthcoming book will help tip the scales of indecision. If this volume proves insufficient, do not despair. A sequel will be forthcoming.
Who will want to read this book ?
Readers interested in sailing, canoeing, and kayaking have no excuse whatsoever for not enjoying this book. Connoisseurs of the English language will quickly categorize these journals as “creative nonfiction,” and then proceed to enjoy them as do the others. The descriptions and pen and ink drawings may be appreciated more by readers familiar with southern New England, but the writing is universal.
At times, the water recedes. There are days when the author writes about sitting at home before the fire with The Pusslet on his lap, staring into the flames and waiting for spring. Boaters are nearly as normal as normal people pretend to be: except for the frostbite racers, who have antifreeze in their veins, the average boater is content to stay at home all winter and varnish his kitchen cupboards. Other lies can be found throughout this book.
